Education has been my passion for the last 25 years, especially the education of special needs children and hands-on, individualized learning. I want to discuss how my journey from Montessori to ABS was able to bring me here and create my new business, Triton Support Services. I’m at this point in my life where I can see a connection between each of the stages. It reassures me that I needed to learn and develop myself in order to be prepared for the journey that lies ahead. Triton Support Services is that next step in hands-on special education.
My Montessori Foundation
I started as a Montessori teacher, and what I was juggling at that time was raising young children while also being very involved in classrooms. Having a Montessori foundation allowed me to grasp and understand education from a grassroots level, as I incorporated Montessori methods into my teaching and parenting. Maria Montessori captured my heart and gave my life purpose. I really looked at her as my hero and as my example of how to raise children and provide education in a way that works for all needs. It was because of her inspiration that I started to really develop my idea of inclusion and what might be possible for education.

My Experience at Alternative Behavior Strategies (ABS)
I was pretty serious about finding solutions for special needs children in Montessori schools, which is what eventually developed into multi-disciplinary therapy for children with autism at ABS.
I wanted solutions desperately for private schools. Parents of special needs children are stuck between education services and healthcare services, but there is a whole lot of education needed to navigate both systems. There is also a great deal of bureaucratic red tape safeguarding school services from healthcare services and parents are stuck juggling ways to incorporate both, especially when it comes to public schools.
I am grateful for the insights I gained and for the organizational, culture and leadership aspects through that experience. I am especially grateful for the people I was able to learn from, who taught me about healthcare services and innovative ways to create access for children… especially in rural areas.

My Passion Embodied in Triton Support Services
Since ABS, I’ve been continuing contributing time and efforts toward autism at ARTC. ARTC is a non-profit organization in San Diego that is designed to bring all sorts of resources together, to help parents navigate through services & resources available.
During COVID-19 of 2020, I felt called to look at services through new ways, as therapy services transferred to telehealth and school services became obsolete. I witnessed serious implications from social distancing and education regression, very early on.
The situation had me take a deeper look at the education systems that we have in place and why. Having large group instruction, run by schedules and bells, is archaic. It was designed when we needed to develop skilled workers for manufacturing needs. Additionally, the memorization and computation requirements are outdated, considering the fact that we now have developed computers and we www access to information.
As we develop a “new norm” education can return to a sensorial approach. Children need practical application in order to thrive in the technology-centered world we live in today. The autism community has allowed me to see the evolution of humanity, as a gift, to take us into the new age. It is time to work as a more cohesive unit, including all abilities. Education will expand our human potential when we tap into the “spark” that is the intrinsic drive for education and innovation. The autistic mind has the ability to do amazing things when we find what drives their motivation… let that be an invitation to a model for all minds to incorporate.
I think it is time to transform the education system. There’s never been a better time. When we look at a sensorial approach, at intrinsic motivations, and at the current environment, we see that with the help of parents, we can create learning environments that are much more natural.
Imagine a world full of natural interaction with nature, art, and music….
Imagine a new education that actually served all children, at all levels and all abilities…
Imagine every child having access….
That is the vision for Triton Support Services. This is an opportunity to connect to those interests and to get support with education and special needs services in a fluid environment and a flexible schedule.
covid-19 as a catalyst: why triton is needed now
It is the right time to transform education. Due to the pandemic, Children have experienced, and are continuing to experience:
1. Regression
2. Trauma
As educators, we are used to seeing regression, usually over the summertime, and now an even longer break. All students regress over summer break, and educators expect this. Special needs children are even more adversely affected by time away from education and structure. This extended time out of school and therapy creates a deeper regression. Additionally, special needs children are experiencing extreme isolation and a lack of socialization. There is a level of trauma, just from living so isolated, that directly leads to anxiety and depression.
We are creating an opportunity for parents to be at the center of pushing forward with education. Many are frustrated with the educational content coming from teachers using platforms like Zoom, because the environment that children are expected to consume education in is not beneficial (or even possible) for many of them.

Partnership between Triton Support Services and ARTC
I am the co-founder of Triton Support Services, along with Tracy Sekhon, who is the founder of ARTC. We decided to position Triton within the ARTC space in an effort to foster fluidity between education and therapeutic services, under one roof. Currently, ARTC is providing a private FB group for Autism Moms. If you’re in San Diego, you are welcome to come into ARTC and activities for parents at the center. https://www.facebook.com/groups/323274318891932
